Everything You Need to Know

Find answers to the most common questions about Bachata and our courses.

General

What is Bachata?

Bachata is a Latin American partner dance from the Dominican Republic, characterised by its sensual music and flowing movements.

What is Sensual Bachata?

Bachata Sensual is a modern Bachata style that was developed in Spain. It combines traditional Bachata foundations with flowing body movements, changes of direction and musical interpretation.

The goal is not to dance as many figures as possible, but to perform movements in a controlled, comfortable way that matches the music. Clear leading, good body control, safe technique and respectful interaction are particularly important.

Which Bachata style is taught at Bachata Bliss?

In our beginner courses, we start with a neutral and solid Bachata foundation. From the Improver level onwards, you will be introduced to elements of Bachata Sensual, Bachata Dominicana and Bachata Moderna.

We believe it is important to have at least a basic understanding of different Bachata styles. From the Intermediate level onwards, the styles are combined, with a stronger focus on Bachata Sensual.

For this reason, our Intermediate and Advanced courses last 90 minutes. Part of the class is specifically dedicated to Sensual technique, body control and preparatory exercises.

Do I need any dance experience?

No. Our beginner course is specifically designed for complete beginners. You do not need any previous knowledge or dance experience.

We start with the fundamentals and build up the content step by step.

Which language are the courses taught in?

Depending on the composition of the group, classes are taught in German or English.

As many international dancers attend our classes, lessons are often taught in English. However, you are always welcome to ask questions in German. We make sure that all participants can follow the class comfortably.

Course Levels and Choosing the Right Course

Do I only attend each course level once?

No. The goal is not to progress through the levels as quickly as possible, but to learn how to dance confidently, safely and sustainably.

Everyone learns at a different pace. It can therefore be helpful to repeat a module or course level, particularly if you have missed several classes or still find certain topics challenging.

Which course should I attend after completing my current course?

Our course system is designed to build progressively from one level to the next.

After completing the beginner course, you move on to Improver 1. At this level, you complete Modules A and B. The order in which you attend the two modules does not matter.

Afterwards, you continue with Improver 2. This level consists of Modules A, B, C and D and should be attended for at least four course blocks.

Once you feel confident with the content and can follow the classes comfortably, you can move on to the Intermediate course. You can remain at this level for as long as it is beneficial for your development.

Highly experienced and motivated dancers who have attended the Intermediate level for a longer period may ask Jules whether moving to the Advanced course would be appropriate.

I have already danced Bachata somewhere else. Which course level is right for me?

Every dance school and course programme is structured differently. The content, technique and focus can therefore vary significantly.

In general, we recommend attending our beginner course first, even if you already have dance experience. This allows you to become familiar with our technical foundations, terminology and course system.

If you would like to join a higher level directly, please contact us before registering. Together, we can determine which course is best suited to your current level.

Partnerwork and Solo Classes

What is the difference between partnerwork and solo classes?

In partnerwork classes, you dance together with another person. You learn how to lead or follow movements and how to dance with different partners.

If you have never danced Bachata before, we recommend starting with a partnerwork beginner course. Bachata is fundamentally a partner dance, which is why we do not offer a solo only course for complete beginners.

In solo classes, you dance on your own. These classes focus on areas such as body movement, footwork, styling, musicality, coordination and body control.

Both types of classes complement each other very well. While partnerwork classes focus particularly on Lead & Follow and connection, solo classes allow you to concentrate more closely on your own movements.

What does Leader and Follower mean?

In partner dancing, one person takes the role of the Leader and the other person takes the role of the Follower.

The Leader uses movement impulses, body positions and changes of direction to communicate which movement will be danced. The Follower perceives these signals and responds to them through movement. Both roles are equally important and require technique, awareness and good communication.

You can decide for yourself whether you would like to dance as a Leader or Follower, regardless of your gender. The previously common terms “men’s role” and “women’s role” are therefore no longer appropriate.

Do I have to choose one role?

When registering, you can choose whether you would like to participate as a Leader, a Follower or flexibly in both roles.

If you select both roles, you may be assigned to whichever role is currently needed to create a more balanced group.

Your role is not determined by your gender. Some dancers learn both roles over time, which can significantly improve their understanding of Lead & Follow.

Do I need a dance partner?

No. You are very welcome to register on your own.

In our partnerwork classes, we regularly rotate partners. This allows you to learn how to dance with different people and helps you develop your leading or following skills more quickly.

Are styling classes only for women?

No. Our styling classes are open to all genders.

As Jules teaches her personal styling in these classes, some movements may have a more feminine character. However, both men and women can benefit from the exercises.

If you would like to work on solo movements but prefer fewer feminine elements, the Footwork and Body Movement course may be more suitable for you.

Why should I attend a solo class?

They allow you to work specifically on body awareness, coordination, balance, styling, body movement, footwork and musicality. The content is often practised through short combinations or routines.

Solo classes help you move with greater awareness and confidence. They are also a lot of fun and give you the opportunity to develop your own individual dance style.

Registration, Course Blocks and Passes

Can I attend individual drop-in classes?

In general, it is possible to attend individual classes.

A 60 minute class costs €20 and a 90 minute class costs €25.

Drop-ins are only possible if there is still a place available in the relevant course and your dance level is suitable for the course content. Please contact us in advance so that we can discuss this with you.

I will be abroad for a longer period during the course block. Is there a solution?

We always try to accommodate individual circumstances as well as possible.

It is important that you contact us before booking. If you already know that you will miss a longer period during the course block, we can discuss whether there is a suitable solution and how you can make the most of the remaining classes.

Changes requested after booking cannot be accommodated.

I registered but have not received a confirmation yet. Am I still registered?

All registrations are processed personally. New participants must first be added to our system and then assigned to the relevant course. It may therefore take a few days for you to receive your confirmation and invoice.

If you successfully submitted the form and the course was not marked as fully booked at the time of registration, your place is generally reserved.

For Early Bird prices, the date on which you submitted the registration form is what counts, not the date on which you receive your confirmation.

If you have still not received a message shortly before the course begins, please contact us.

When do I have to pay for the course?

You can find the exact payment deadline on your invoice. The course fee must be paid in full before the course begins.

Please note that your registration becomes binding as soon as you submit the registration form. An unpaid invoice does not mean that your registration can be withdrawn or cancelled.

How much does a course cost?

You can find the current prices here.

How long does one class last?

Our classes last either 60 or 90 minutes.

This includes the warm up, learning and practising the course content and, where applicable, filming a short video at the end of the class.

Which pass is right for me?

Most courses last 60 minutes. If you would like to attend one course per week, choose the 1 Hour Pass.

The Intermediate and Advanced courses last 90 minutes. You will need the 1.5 Hour Pass for these courses.

If you would like to attend several courses per week, the Extreme Pass is the best option. It allows you to attend all courses at your current level and below, provided that places are still available.

What do Block 1 and Block 2 mean?

One semester consists of a total of 16 course weeks and is divided into two blocks.

Block 1 lasts eight weeks and Block 2 also lasts eight weeks.

You can purchase a pass for one block only or book the entire semester. If you book the full semester, you may still switch to another suitable course during the second block. For example, you could attend the beginner course during the first block and Improver 1 during the second block.

Can I attend a free trial class?

At the beginning of a new course block, we usually offer a free trial class for complete beginners. The dates are announced on our website and social media channels.

If you would like to try another course or a higher course level, you may attend a single drop-in class by prior arrangement. If you decide not to register for the course afterwards, the drop-in class will be charged at the regular price.

How do I register for a course?

Complete the registration form for the relevant course. You can find the registration link on the course page.

Your registration becomes binding once you submit the form.

Preparing for and Attending Classes

When should I arrive for class?

Please allow enough time to arrive before the class begins, change your shoes and prepare for the lesson.

The studio is usually open approximately 15 to 20 minutes before the first class.

Please arrive at least a few minutes before the class begins so that we can start on time together.

What clothing is suitable for Bachata?

Wear clothing that makes you feel comfortable and allows you to move freely.

You do not need any special dancewear. As you may work up a sweat during the class, comfortable and breathable clothing is ideal.

What shoes should I wear?

You can wear dance shoes or clean sneakers. Make sure that the soles do not grip the floor too strongly and that you can turn comfortably in them.

Outdoor shoes are not permitted on the dance floor. Please always bring a clean pair of indoor shoes.

Regular high heels that are not specifically designed for dancing are not permitted in the studio and are generally unsuitable for classes. Heeled dance shoes may only be worn with suitable heel protectors.

Missed Classes, Make-up Classes and Cancellations

What happens if I miss a class?

Missed classes cannot generally be transferred to a later course block or another semester.

Within the same block, you may attend another course at your level or below by prior arrangement, provided that a place is available.

For example, if you attend Improver 1, you may be able to make up a missed class by attending a beginner course or a suitable solo class.

Please always arrange this with us in advance.

Can I cancel my course?

You may cancel free of charge up to 14 days before the course begins.

If you cancel up to seven days before the course begins, 50 percent of the participation fee will be charged. If you cancel later or do not attend, the full course fee must be paid.

By prior arrangement, you may nominate a suitable replacement participant to take your place in the course.

Please note that your registration is binding as soon as you submit the registration form. These cancellation conditions apply regardless of whether the invoice has already been paid.

I can’t make it to class today. Do I need to let you know?

No. If you only miss one class, you do not need to let us know separately. You are of course welcome to post in your course’s WhatsApp group to say that you will not be attending.

In this case, please do not send an additional private message, as with many participants, individual messages can quickly add up.

If you will be absent for a longer period, there is something important you need to discuss, or you would like to make up a missed class in another course, you are of course welcome to contact me directly.

Workshops and Events

I can no longer attend a workshop or event. Can I cancel my ticket?

When purchasing a ticket for a workshop, social, party, festival or comparable event organised by Bachata Bliss, your booking is binding.

Cancellations after purchase are generally not possible. Participation fees that have already been paid cannot be refunded.

However, you may transfer your ticket to another person up to 48 hours before the event begins. Please send us the replacement participant’s details in good time. A €10 administration fee will be charged for changing the name on the ticket and must be paid before the change can be processed.

If no replacement participant is provided within the required timeframe, the ticket will expire without any entitlement to a refund.

When do I have to pay for a workshop or event ticket?

The participation fee must be paid in full by bank transfer within 14 days of receiving the invoice.

In the event of late payment, we reserve the right to release the reserved place and exclude you from participating in the event.
